Triathlon North Africa is definitely more than just a race. I can say that it is an experience worth every spent money. You have the opportunity to spend 5 days in the Sahara desert and to be able to complete a very demanding and extreme triathlon. During the race between the palms and dunes, you have the opportunity to feel that you are doing something unreal.

Fear not! In the wintertime Sahara, most animals are cozily tucked away in hibernation, leaving you free to explore without worry. 24. Air and water temperature during the race?
The Saharaman isn't just a race; it's an adventure through some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. Picture this: you'll be covering vast distances in remote areas, navigating deep sands, battling strong headwinds, and experiencing temperature swings that add a whole new dimension to the challenge.
- Morning Temperature (06:00 am - 09:00 am): Brace yourself for a chilly start, with temperatures ranging from 4°C to 8°C as you kick off your journey.
- Swimming Part: Once you hit the water, expect a refreshing dip with water temperatures ranging from 10°C to 17°C.
- Cycling Part: The cycling leg offers an open landscape with minimal shade, making it the perfect playground for strong headwinds. Prepare wisely and dress accordingly for temperatures hovering between 15°C to 23°C.
- Running Part: Congratulations on reaching T2! As you soak in some of the legendary Sahara sun, you'll begin to feel the heat. The temperature will climb to 27°C, which can feel more like 32°C due to the sun's intensity. Despite the warmth, we recommend grabbing an extra layer as you leave T2, because as the sun sets, the temperature takes a sharp nosedive, plummeting as low as 10 degrees within the first 30 minutes after sunset. So, keep those layers handy as the day unfolds!
25. Will I need a lot of special gear?
Not at all! To embark on this thrilling adventure, all you really need are the basics: a swimsuit, a trusty bike, a snug bike helmet, and a reliable pair of running shoes. But here's the exciting part—there's a world of specialized gear waiting for you, tailored to each leg of this incredible sport. The extent to which you indulge in gear will ultimately hinge on your personal goals and dedication. However, we do have one crucial recommendation: Pack those bike spare parts! Remember, you'll be navigating the vast desert terrain, far from any bike shops, so it's always wise to be self-sufficient.
26. Do I need a triathlon license?
No, the participation is open to athletes of any nationality, licensed or not.
Training & Preparation
27. How should I train for Saharaman?
Training for an extreme triathlon in the desert requires focusing on heat and cold (swimming) adaptation, endurance, and off-road terrain. We recommend training in these conditions, simulating the type of sand and rocky surfaces you’ll face in the Sahara. Strengthening your core and legs for the long bike ride and dune running is also essential.
28. What are the key challenges of racing in the Sahara?
The temperature fluctuation (very cold in the morning, heat in the afternoon and very cold during the night), sandstorms, and physical demands of running on soft sand and rocky surfaces are major challenges. Dehydration and sunburn are also significant risks. Mental preparation is just as important as physical readiness, as the isolation and environment can be overwhelming.
